I had the great pleasure of taking my niece and nephew to the Elkhart County 4H Fair while I was in Indiana a couple weeks ago. It’s pretty much an indisputable fact that fair food is one of THE best parts of the whole fair experience and we made sure to get our fill of all the tasty treats; Elephant ears (for all you west coast friends, think of a funnel cake except flat, and sort of the shape and size of an elephant’s ear!), cotton candy, lemon shake-ups, Nelson’s Port-a-Pit chicken, fried green tomatoes and, of course, candy apples.

I even heard a rumor that vendors selling fried candy bars had a new product — fried BUTTER!

My first item of the day – Fried green tomatoes with jalapeno ranch dip. YUM!

Emma enjoying her candy apple…

…

…

…until we remembered that candy apples and a loose tooth don’t go very well together.

My nephew, Noah, was gone most of the day with my younger sister, Kaitlyn. I wasn’t brave enough to ride on all the big kid rides and decided to take Emma on the kiddie ones, but still almost ended up losing my stomach on the tilt-a-whirl. Good thing I didn’t lose my appetite though because we saved one of the best things for last…

Nelson’s Port-a-Pit Chicken is A-MAZ-ING! I’m pretty sure that Nelson’s hasn’t branched out anywhere in the U.S. Except for the Elkhart County area in Northern Indiana, but I sure wish they would. It had been at least six or seven years since the last time I had their chicken and I was not disappointed.

Overall it was one of the best days that I spent during my week and a half visit. I can’t wait to go back!
