Coming Soon…

Chris and I have been working together on a greeting card project, to be used mostly as a means of advertising.

Thanks to Chris, the finished products will be available for purchase at Broadway Books!

My print shop will be re-opening so they’ll be available online, as well. They’re 5×7" with a 4×6" print, envelope and plastic sleeve.

This was the commemorative photo we took earlier tonight after we’d stamped, glued and packaged the first test card together.

Exciting!

Milk in My Tea

Though I like all of these, I think the second to last one is most successful because the arc of the milk makes the zoomed-in shot a little more interesting and a bit of a different picture altogether.

Anyway, just geeking out with the tripod and my daily cup. :)

Say Hello

Ben recently became the caretaker of the absolute mother lode of vintage cameras and brought them over to play with this weekend.

One of them (not pictured) is a Canon AE-1, which was the first camera I ever learned how to shoot on. And I don’t just mean that model, I mean that exact camera. Ben was borrowing it from his grandpa when we first met some 9 years ago, and used it to teach me the finer aspects of photography (click here to see some of my early stuff!).

Man, memories!

Ben also bestowed upon me the Rolleiflex 2.8C, as he knew I would love and care for it– and most importantly, use it!

Felix made sure to do his duties as a cat and get in the way. Cats: they don’t care.

There’s also a Kodak Autographic 1A in there (it’s one of the folders), which comes with a stylus for scribbling in notes onto the negative. It kind of blew my mind.

This book came with the camera, which is actually not very helpful, but it’s got all sorts of vintage photos, ads and other goodies so it’s a keeper.

That’s me pouting last night because I didn’t know how to use the Rolleiflex. I was able to figure out how to load film and fire off a few shots today, though (thanks YouTube!) so the pouting stages have ended… For now, anyway!

Cursive must’ve been pretty big back then because a lot of them had the name written like this Exakta. Totally gorgeous to look at but a pain in the butt to try and actually read off an ages-old leather case.

A few of the cameras were bite-sized and adorable.

And don’t even get me started on trying to decipher the embossed leather case for the Rokuoh-Sha Lily. Good grief!

Most of the other cameras I couldn’t find much information on, and many of them we couldn’t figure out how to even use. Still, it was fun sitting in my living room tinkering around with it all in complete wonderment.

This afternoon we went to Cartola for some coffee and cameras– an undeniably good combination. I don’t have a hand-held light meter so I lugged my dSLR around with a similar lens to give me a ballpark range.

I’m already close to the end of my first roll and am beyond excited to get it developed! I’ll keep you all posted on the results. Natch.

NEW! - Fauxtography Actions

I’m so excited to release the new Fauxtography action set that I nearly choked on my Voodoo Donut! The set is $20 for 13 actions and 9 super sloppy frames.

Check out the shop for an official gallery view, or click here for a super concise glance of what’s in store.

Here’s a run-down on each action:

Carbon - My go-to faux film action. I love this one and use it all the time. It works great with the light leak actions, too, if you have those.
Oscuro - Similar to Carbon but it “burns” the image, so it works best on lighter photos.
Sponge - Gives a “glossy” look. I love to use it on photos with text (like the stack of books shown in the gallery).
Lipgloss - A cherry-tone colored version of Sponge.
Couleur - A basic filmy action with lots of grain.
Vert - A basic filmy action with lots of grain and a strong green tone.
Bleu - A basic filmy action with lots of grain and strong blue/light yellow tones.
Memento - I love this one - depending on the colors in your photo it can really transform the picture into something else. Gives highlights a soft yellow tone and shadows a bluish haze.
Jaune - I like to think of this action as a warm, yellow blanket being thrown over a photo.
Taffy - My go at a fauxlaroid color scheme. Dave Ward makes a great Polaroid frame that I like to use with this action.
Glaze - A basic action that gives a “filmy” look. Lightens shadows and warms things up a bit.
Blast - Like Glaze, but more intense.
Cadre - A simple frame/matte-like action, with slight vignetting and drop-shadow to give it a 3D-ish effect.

Plus 9 sloppy frames created by me: 4 4×5 frames, 3 5×7 frames and 2 square frames.

Phew! Sorry it took so long to get these released, but I appreciate all the support and prodding everyone’s been giving me along the way. :)

Oh, and in case you were wondering, there’s a whole post’s worth of Voodoo Donut face stuffing in the works! Stay tuned!

Traces

I’m jumping back in the geotagging saddle and have made it a point to include coords for all the photos I upload to Flickr.

It’s so useful when I want to go back and re-visit a scene, and it’s pretty fun to be able to browse my stream and watch the dots move according to where I was hanging out that particular period of time.

I did my best to geotag all my photos from Thailand which was definitely more painful than fun.

Also helpful for fellow Portlanders who want to stalk the furry friends in my neighborhood. :)
