July 2, 2009: Brittney and Damien (Part II)

Since I couldn’t manage to slim it down, here’s another round of Mr. and Mrs. Adams! Cheers!

There’s no champagne in that glass– it’s apple cider! Brittney is allergic so this photo was staged, but I can guarantee there’s nothing staged about the photos below. I can also guarantee that there isn’t champagne or apple cider in that flask!

The abundance of greenery made the red/black theme really pop out. Unfortunately, not everyone in the wedding party was interested in having their picture taken. :)

One thing that really stood out were the floral arrangements, done by the bride’s mother. Some, like the bouquet, were more complex, while others were perfectly simple.

There were other little touches that made me smile, too, like custom made fortune cookies, the tea/lemonade dispensers and Chinese lanterns hanging from all the trees. All the makings of a delightful outdoor wedding!

Photos 1, 13 and 14 were taken by Allyson Riggs (Assistant to the Regional Manager!) and processed by me.

July 2, 2009: Brittney and Damien (Part I)

A week and a half ago two of my friends from college tied the knot in Rio Dell, California. Not only was I invited to the wedding, but also hired as their photographer!

Doing anything in Humboldt is always a bit tricky given the capricious coastal weather, so everyone was a bit on edge the morning of when we awoke to cloudy skies and an insane amount of wind. Luckily, there wasn’t a drop of rain, and of course the overcast made for great portrait lighting, even if we were freezing our buns off at times.

Photos 3, 6 and 8 shot by Allyson Riggs and processed by me.

June 23, 2009: Alice in Wonderland

I can tell when something is teetering on the edge of being old news because I’m usually the last to hear about it, so forgive me if you’re already sick to death of seeing the latest pictures from Tim Burton’s upcoming Alice in Wonderland. But really, how was I supposed to resist?

(via Ecranlarge)

Everything looks amazamazing, but I got really excited when I read the casting. Alan Rickman as the Caterpillar? Yes, please! Something I may not have divulged about myself on here is that I have a huge thing for Alan Rickman. It is, admittedly, one of the reasons why I enjoy Die Hard so much.

Other cast members to be excited about: Crispin Glover (Knave of Hearts), Johnny Depp (Mad Hatter), Helena Bonham Carter (The Red Queen), Christopher Lee (The Jabberwock), Frances de la Tour (Aunt Imogene) and a slew of other familiar faces.

I’ve read on quite a few blogs that some folks are worried this film will be all style and no substance. Even if that is the case, judging by these press photos, it’ll be worth seeing anyway. I’ve always thought the story was way more terrifying than Disney’s delightful romp through Wonderland, so it’ll be fun to see that reflected in Burton’s signature style.

The only things that concern me so far are possible CG overkill and the fact that Tweedle Dee and Dum look more like Pugsley Addams.

Thanks to Kristen for the original tip-off!

June 21, 2009: Happy Father’s Day

Happy Father’s Day to all the papas out there!

This is a photo of my dad and brothers when I was just a twinkle in my mom’s eyes. It’s one of my favorite shots from our family album.

June 18, 2009: Better Late Than Never

This last Monday Chris and I celebrated our 3-year anniversary. I hate to be a cliche, but I can’t believe it! The years have flown by, while at the same time seeming like it was forever ago that we tied the proverbial knot.

These are a few photos from our wedding, shot by my friend, Harland. We had a pretty modest affair, so we didn’t hire a photographer. In retrospect I really regret it, but I guess that’s what memories are for, eh? :)

This Saturday I’m shooting a wedding and as a result of the nerves kicking in, I can’t look at enough wedding photography! I’ve been devouring the stuff on Flickr, getting inspiration and ideas, or just squealing over the inevitable flood of warm-fuzzies.

Do you have a favorite wedding photographer, photo or memory that makes you squeal, too? Post it in the comments!

June 5, 2009: I Want It, I Want It, I Want It

Earlier this week Allyson let me take her D90 on a test drive. I pretty much fell in love with the video capabilities, but I’m still partial to my D50 when it comes to actually shooting photos. That might change once I get back to Redding and edit the photos I shot on her camera with my lenses.

If there were ever any doubt as to what a huge dork I am (or the dorks I like to keep as company), let these videos be the living proof! I mean, really? Krumping foxgloves? What was I thinking?

Enjoy, and have a nice weekend, y’all!

June 3, 2009: Fashionably Functional

I fear I’m turning into a bore; exciting clothes just don’t excite me like they used to!

All of my cutesy prints and fancy things are slowly being swapped out for plain tops and jeans. These days all I want to do is hang under the radar and blend in with the crowd, instead of stand out from it.

Forever21 was the beginning of the end for me. It’s my one-stop shop for cheap-as-free basics and quirky accessories. The mint tee (above) is the best! I also really appreciate that it’s a scoop neck because many t-shirt collars feel like borderline strangulation. I’m pretty sure I could live in long, plain-colored tees for the rest of my life, if that thought doesn’t depress Chris too much!

The occasional accent of color or texture here or there is all I really need to be happy anymore. Anything beyond that just makes me feel goofy. I’m starting to realize that there is a very fine line between fashion and function, and just how much I wanna walk that line.

Anyone else ever feel this way? I must be growing up.

This suspender skirt is the perfect example of a marriage between simplicity and spunky. All I’d need to complete the outfit is a boring top and cute sandals.

My thirst for shoes, however, will never die. Luckily, these forest green suede flats are not available in my size.

And, after all that moaning about turning an apathetic eye to my wardrobe, I have to say I really dig this dress. I don’t think I’ve ever owned anything so crazy and out there in my life, but I want it. Thank God it’s not available in my size, either!

Phew!

May 25, 2009: Over the Hills and Far Away

In a few hours I’m going to be in Arcata for a whole month, which is both exciting and sad at the same time.

Exciting because I get to:

  • See all my old college friends!
  • Shoot a wedding.
  • Ride bikes to the beach.
  • Have access to loads of happy and fresh produce. I can only think of one market in Redding where I can get kale. How sad is that?
  • Enjoy one whole month of awesome coastal weather. Crossing my fingers for some rain!

Sad because I will have to:

  • Attend summer school.
  • Be without Chris and Felix for 30+ days!
  • Say good-bye to the blog for a bit.

That last one is the real kicker, huh? I will have a laptop with me, so I’ll be able to keep up with all of you, but I won’t be doing photo-editing while there.

Speaking of photos: I broke down and made a tumblr (belly flop) because I’ve realized that not every single photo I shoot belongs on Flickr. Right now it’s just more of my photography, but it may evolve into something more.

If I don’t catch you around the blogosphere, then have a wonderful month, everyone!

May 22, 2009: Interrupting Your Broadcast for an Important Cat Update…

Two days ago Felix came home with a winky eye. Knowing how wonderfully he gets on with the other cats in the yard, we figured he’d gotten into a cat fight. We actually blamed Scruffy, because he’s known for incessantly chasing / irritating other cats.

However, last night we noticed something sticking out of the corner of Felix’s eye and, after a few gentle tugs, we decided it was no job for a novice.

Turns out it was a foxtail, but rather than just being in his fur, it was stuck in his eye, underneath his lower lid. I took him to the vet early this morning and they numbed his eye up real good and yanked it out. Apparently this is a very common occurrence in the summertime with outdoor cats.

Felix is feeling much better now (the photo in the grass was taken about an hour ago), but he got two ulcers in his eye because of the foxtail and we have to give him an ointment 3 times a day for a week to help heal them.

So this is my horror story that could’ve gone a lot worse… From one cat owner to another: Be aware of foxtails!

May 21, 2009: The Cat Files: Scruffy

Holy crow! Has it really been a week+ since the last Cat File? Sincerest apologies– the days seem to just fly by lately.

Well, this week I was going to focus on Eddie, one of my all-time favorite cats ever. However, folks over at Flickr fell in love with Scruffy when we realized his potential to breed adorable Oreo-kitties with simple moth’s Sakura. I’ll save Eddie for next time.

Don’t forget to check out the cell pic I tweeted of me and Scruffy, about 3 years ago.

Catchin' Bokeh

Cat Nap Scruffers

Full Name: Scruffy

Aliases: Scruff, Scruffers, OJ

Age: 9 years.

Coat / Build: Long-hair, curly on the belly. Built like a bear.

Meow Type: The Tenacious Attention-Seeker.

Backstory: Scruffy showed up some years ago at Sue and Charlie’s house. Thinking nothing of it (strays are pretty common here) they took him in, unable to believe such a healthy, loving cat didn’t have a home. One day Scruffy disappeared and the loss of his neediness was mourned. Two girls who lived down the street came by to say that Scruffy was their cat, whom they had named “OJ” and thought had died. Right before the girls and their family went on a road trip, Scruffy had gotten sprayed by a skunk, so they put him outside. Being an indoor cat all his life, Scruffy ran away to the Miller-Born’s house, which is a veritable cat paradise. While walking by one day, the girls noticed Scruffy and took him home, and that’s when he had disappeared. However, Scruffy had a mind of his own, and he eventually wandered back to the Miller-Borns where the girls decided to let him stay.

Likes: Attention! Headbutts. Chow-chowing (kneading, making biscuits, etc) on your belly.

Dislikes: Other cats. Being outside. Being ignored.

Favorite Place to Nap: In the rafters of the garage.

Claim to Fame: Having Roman pillars for arms and legs. Being incredibly good-looking for his age.

Downfall: Meowing at the back door, window, front door, side door and garage door all day, every day.
